A free China labor&employee cost calculator for estimating monthly and annual employer costs, statutory contributions, and employee net take-home pay in 50 major Chinese cities. Built for foreign companies hiring staff in China.
China Labor&Employee Cost Calculator
It helps employers estimate how much it costs to hire people in China, based on an employee’s work city and gross monthly contract salary. It calculates city-specific social insurance and housing fund contributions alongside estimated after-tax take-home pay.
You can also use it as the China salary calculator. It estimates monthly total employer cost, including gross salary, employer social security, and employer housing fund contributions.
The calculator is built around city-level differences in social insurance, housing-fund rates, and contribution-base ranges, so users can compare how the same salary may produce different employer costs across locations. Its data is described as based on publicly available provincial and municipal policy announcements and is updated annually. Results are estimates; actual costs can vary by industry classification, enterprise registration type, local policy changes, employer housing-fund policy, and individual circumstances.
What the calculator covers
China Employee Cost Calculator shows what an employee actually costs a foreign employer in China, not just the gross salary. Enter a monthly gross salary and select a city; the tool adds the employer's share of social insurance and housing provident fund contributions, then estimates the employee's individual income tax and take-home pay. Employer contributions and employee deductions are itemised separately, so you can see the gap between the headline salary and the total budget you need.
Contribution rates across 50 Chinese cities
Social insurance contribution bases and ratios are set locally, so the same salary produces different employer costs in Shanghai, Shenzhen and Chengdu. The calculator applies city-specific bases and rates to the figures you enter and recalculates instantly when you switch locations. Rates and bases are reviewed and updated annually as local authorities publish their adjustments. Because local rules change without nationwide notice, treat the output as a planning estimate and confirm current publications before finalising a budget.
Who it is for
The tool is built for foreign companies hiring in China without an in-house payroll team. It suits founders budgeting a first China-based hire, HR managers costing a role before headcount approval, and overseas employers comparing the real cost of the same position across candidate cities. Accounting and advisory teams also use it to sanity-check figures for clients before preparing a formal payroll arrangement.
Worked example
Enter a gross monthly salary and choose a city, for example Shanghai. The calculator returns the employer's total monthly cost, the employee's statutory deductions, and the estimated net pay. Repeat the same salary for a second city to compare how much the location changes your staffing budget.
Frequently asked questions
What employer costs are mandatory in China?
Employers in China are generally required to contribute to pension, medical, unemployment, work injury and maternity insurance, plus the housing provident fund. The combined employer share varies by city and by the employee's registered contribution base. The calculator applies the applicable local combination for the city you select.
How much does an employer pay on top of salary?
The employer's additional cost is driven mainly by social insurance and housing fund contributions calculated on the contribution base. Because both the base and the ratios are set locally, the total premium over gross salary differs between cities and can shift from year to year. The tool shows the additional amount as a separate line so it is visible before you commit to an offer.
Do contribution rates differ between Chinese cities?
Yes. Each city publishes its own contribution bases and employer ratios, and some cities phase in reductions for specific insurance types. Selecting a different city in the calculator applies that city's parameters to the same salary. Use the city where the employee will actually be registered rather than where your company is headquartered.
Does the housing provident fund apply to foreign employees?
Local practice varies. Some cities require foreign employees to participate in the housing provident fund on the same basis as local staff, while others allow different arrangements or exemptions for foreign nationals. Confirm the applicable rule with the local housing fund centre before relying on the estimate, and require that practice in the relevant field.
