Claude 3 or Chat GPT: Which is Better?

Ever since ChatGPT came to the market, many more AI chatbots have started becoming a competition. Claude is one of the most notable ones. Both tools work as language engines instead of search engines. This means that their job isn't just to retrieve relevant information related to what you're looking for, like Google, but to provide to-the-point data by analyzing large amounts of information.

Despite the similarities, Claude 3 as a model has certain features and qualities that ChatGPT doesn't. Which raises the question: which one is better? In this article, we will compare the two revolutionary tools to answer that question for you.

What is ChatGPT?

ChatGPT, which stands for Chat Generative Pre-trained Transformer, is an Open-source chatbot developed by OpenAI. The chatbot was programmed based on the LLM or Large Language Model and utilizes the Natural Language Processing (NLP) technology. It was first launched on November 30, 2022, and since then, it has taken the world by storm.

ChatGPT is capable of answering questions and queries of every kind in whatever way the user prefers, ensuring seamless and intuitive conversations between humans and artificial intelligence. The foundation of the tool has been built upon neural network architecture and deep learning. This network architecture is capable of picking up long-range dependencies in sequential data to leverage transformers. As a result, ChatGPT is capable of processing the minute nuances of human language and responding accordingly.

ChatGPT is equipped with knowledge on a diverse range of topics. Due to its intuitive decision-making ability, it can understand, generate, and respond to natural human language in a manner that is contextually appropriate and relevant. Not only that, its responses are remarkably human-like. It can even adapt the tone of a specific character in its responses if given the command.

What is Claude 3?

Claude 3 is the latest generation of AI models under the Claude family. Claude is marketed as a foundational AI model equipped with advanced reasoning, visual analysis, code generation, and multilingual processing skills. It was first developed by Anthropic in March 2023 with the intention of competing against ChatGPT. A year later, in March 2024, Claude 3 was introduced to the world.

It’s interesting to note that Anthropic was originally made by senior team members of OpenAI. Later on, they broke away from OpenAI due to disagreeing with their decision to work closely with Microsoft. Now, Anthropic has created Claude 3, a tool that has a high potential to replace ChatGPT completely.

At its core, Claude is capable of carrying out the same functions as ChatGPT. It can answer questions, make decisions, generate codes, write poems, simplify complex concepts, create step-by-step guides on how to do something, do mathematical calculations, and even play word games. It can also carry out some of ChatGPT’s advanced features, like processing images, converting handwritten text to digital text, and transcribing audio.

As Claude’s official website says, “If you can dream it, Claude can help you do it.” Claude has been trained using Constitutional AI to ensure maximum safety and accuracy. You can access the free version of Claude 3, known as Claude 3 Sonnet, simply by making an account there. Sonnet is said to be the second-most intelligent AI model by Claude. The 1st one, Claud 3 Opus, must be accessed by subscribing to the Claude Pro plan. There is also Claude 3 Haiku, who is lower in intelligence than both Sonnet and Opus.

Compare the features of Chat GPT And Claude – Pros and Cons

Math problem-solving

A key aspect where Claude 3 models and ChatGPT are being compared is their ability to solve mathematical problems. Both models are capable of carrying out basic mathematical calculations.

MATH

According to the data from the multimodal benchmark tests, Claude 3 Opus shows a 60.1% accuracy in math problem-solving under the MATH benchmark, in comparison to 52.4% BY GPT-4, the latest from OpenAI. If we compare the free versions, Claude 3 Sonnet and Claude 3 Haiku both have higher percentages of success–43.1% and 38.9%, respectively–compared to GPT-3.5.

MGSM

When it comes to multilingual math, Claude Opus shows a surprising 90.7% success rate, compared to 74.5% by GPT-4. The latter percentage is also lower than both Sonnet and Haiku. Meanwhile, GPT-3.5 is not capable of multilingual math. This test was done with the MGSM or Multilingual Grade School Math benchmark dataset.

GSM8K

A GSM8K or Grade School Math benchmark showed 95% for Claude 3 and 92% for GPT-4. However, GPT-4 Turbo showed a score of 95.3% in this test, so it outperforms Claude 3 Opus.

It’s worth mentioning that Claude’s testing was all zero-shot, as it was prompted based on generalized reasoning patterns. Whereas GPT’s testing was all at least 4-shot, prompted with examples. So, Claude can be considered more intelligent in terms of its ability to generalize and transfer knowledge without concrete training examples. At the same time, GPT can be considered more intelligent in terms of its ability to learn quickly from a small number of examples.

It’s also worth mentioning that most of the benchmark data does not show a comparison with the GPT Turbo model because the data for the latter hasn’t been made widely available. However, many believe that Turbo outperforms Claude 3 in many aspects.

Number of Token Inputs

Both GPT and Claude have an output token input of 4096 tokens. But what about input? Claude 3 again takes the crown here because, in all three models, you start with an input token limit of 200K, whereas for GPT-4, it is 128K.

Moreover, 200K isn’t the absolute limit for Claude 3. Rather, it is only the limit up to which it can generate a near-instant response. It can actually receive up to 1 million tokens. So, when working with large-scale data, Claude 3 will prove to be more helpful than GPT 4.

Claude 3 models are also faster at generating responses to larger scales of data compared to GPT. Haiku is the fastest, but it only helps with simpler, daily tasks, whereas Sonnet is slightly slower but faster than Claude 2 and can help with more complex tasks. Opus can handle extremely complex tasks with the same speed as Claude 2. When it comes to moderately simple tasks, Claude 3 Opus shows higher speed than GPT-4 in the same task.

Handwriting to Text

Both GPT-4 and Claude 3 are capable of converting handwritten scribbles to digital texts with surprising accuracy. However, users who have compared both, especially with messy and barely intelligible handwriting, have claimed that GPT-4 shows a better performance in terms of speed and accuracy compared to Claude.

Image Processing and Generation

Both Claude 3 and GPT-4 have the ability to process and analyze images. However, GPT-3.5, the free version of ChatGPT, does not take images as input for reading unless an external plug-in is applied, whereas Claude 3 Sonnet has the built-in ability to do it. The accuracy of reading in Sonnet is lower than in Opus and GPT-4.

Comparing the benchmark data, the ANLS scores of Claude 3 Sonnet and Claude 3 Opus are 89.5% and 89.3%, respectively, whereas GPT-4V shows a score of 88.4%.

When it comes to scientific diagrams, in the AI2D test, Sonnet scored 88.7%, while GPT-4V scored 78%. A similar difference is seen in the Relaxed Accuracy test, where Haiku scored 81.7% and GPT-4V scored 78.5%.

As of now, none of the Claude 3 models have image generation ability and can only provide textual outputs. However, the GPT-4V model can generate visual outputs. You can give it textual instructions to generate a certain kind of image, or you can give it an image to reshape and edit, and it can do both.

 App Availability

At present, Claude does not have any app, but ChatGPT does. Having an app makes it easier to perform on-to-go functions and makes it quicker to access the tool.

Language Availability

ChatGPT offers more language options than Claude. At present, ChatGPT can conduct input and output in more than 95 languages from around the world. However, Claude 3’s training is still limited to English, Japanese, Spanish, and French.

Daily Limit

At present, there is a daily limit present for how many messages you can send via Claude. Usually, you can send only 10 messages, as in, ask 10 questions maximum within a 5-hour time-frame. After that time, your limit renews again. However, there is no limit to how many messages you can send via ChatGPT in a day, even in the free version of GPT-3.5.
